How to Sequence a Yoga Class (Step-by-Step Guide)
Apr 29, 2026What is yoga sequencing?
Yoga sequencing is the process of organizing poses and transitions in a way that prepares students step-by-step for a clear and cohesive final sequence.
If you’ve ever felt like your yoga classes are creative… but slightly scattered, you’re not alone.
A lot of yoga teachers are taught to plan classes by choosing poses and linking them together.
But that approach often leads to classes that feel random instead of cohesive.
If you want your yoga classes to actually make sense — to feel clear, intentional, and successful for your students — the shift is simple:
You need to think about sequencing differently.
Start with the end and work backward
The most effective way to sequence a yoga class is to start with the end and work backward.
Instead of building your class from the beginning, you define where you’re going — and then prepare your students step-by-step to get there.
This creates classes that feel cohesive, purposeful, and easy to follow.
This is one of the foundations of how I build classes.
I don’t start at the beginning. I start at the end — with what I call the grand finale. That final sequence at the end of class where everything comes together. Then I study it. Strategically.
I ask:
- What needs to be lengthened?
- What needs to be strengthened?
- What needs to be activated?
- What transitions should be introduced early?
- How can I break this down into pieces?
From there, I reverse engineer the entire class. Slowly. Intentionally.
So that by the time we arrive at the final sequence…
My students are ready.
Physically and mentally.
And the class feels powerful — not random.
Why I sequence toward a peak flow, not a peak pose
You might hear some sequencing described as sequencing toward a “peak pose.”
That’s not how I teach.
I’m not building toward one final shape.
I’m building toward a peak flow — a sequence of movement that brings everything together.
That shift matters.
Because instead of isolating one moment, you’re creating an experience.

FAQ
How do you sequence a yoga class?
Start by deciding where the class is going, then work backward to prepare students physically and mentally for that final flow or sequence.
What makes a yoga class feel cohesive?
A cohesive yoga class includes repeated movements, clear transitions, intentional preparation, and a final sequence that feels connected to everything that came before it.
Do yoga classes need a peak pose?
Not always. Some teachers build toward a peak pose, but I prefer building toward a peak flow: a sequence of movement where the whole class comes together.
